We described two new minerals, igelströmite and manganoschafarzikite, from the Långban manganese–iron deposit in Värmland, Sweden. The chemical formulae are Fe3+(Sb3+Pb2+)O4 and Mn2+Sb3+2O4, respectively. They belong to a new mineral group, where all members have the same crystal structure. It is called the minium group, after the lead-oxide mineral that is the oldest known substance of this kind.

This is a silicate mineral that contains a significant amount of sodium, calcium, iron, titanium and fluorine. Its atomic structure shows that it is related to other wöhlerite-group minerals. This work provides new insights into the crystallization conditions that ruled the formation of the Pilanesberg complex.

Skogbyite, with the chemical formula Zr(Mg2+2Mn3+4)SiO12, is a new species in the braunite group of minerals. It was discovered in a complex mineral assemblage, essentially a very poor manganese ore, from the Långban Fe–Mn oxide deposit, Värmland County, Bergslagen ore province, Sweden. It is named after the Swedish mineralogist Henrik Skogby (b. 1956). It is a new mineral attesting to the localised mobility and reactivity of zirconium under very special geological conditions.

It is now formally approved by the International Mineralogical Association. It occurs in iron–manganese-bearing rock from the Hilläng mines, Dalarna, Sweden, and is associated with the minerals fayalite, spessartine, ferro-actinolite, calcite, magnetite and pyrite. It formed by replacement of Mn-bearing fayalite.

The crystal structure of fluormacraeite has been refined using synchrotron data that has resolved a small monoclinic distortion due to ordering of K and H2O. Heimaeyite (Na3Al(SO4)3) has been found in fumaroles on Eldfell volcano, which lies on the island of Heimaey, Iceland. Its crystal structure contains Al–sulfate chains and belongs to a known structure type that also comprises K–Nb, K–Ta, Na–V, and Na–Fe representatives. We registered small Fe–Al substitution in heimaeyite, which might indicate a solid solution between Na–Al and Na–Fe compounds. We investigated the specimen with electron microscopy, an electron microprobe, and X-ray diffraction.

Andreybulakhite, ideally Ni(C2O4) · 2H2O, is a new oxalate mineral, which was discovered on the Kola Peninsula, Russia. Andreybulakhite forms segregations of crystals up to 2 × 1 × 1 mm in size disseminated within the fruiting bodies of Lecanora cf. polytropa lichen, whose colonies overgrow the oxidized surfaces of pyrrhotite–pentlandite–chalcopyrite ore. Andreybulakhite is named in honour of Andrey Glebovich Bulakh of Saint Petersburg State University.

Dacostaite is a new fluoride–arsenate mineral found in the Sb(Au) deposit of the Cetine di Cotorniano Mine (Tuscany, Italy). It shows a novel crystal structure formed by heteropolyhedral layers and isolated Mg(H2O)6 groups connected by H bonds. The heteropolyhedral layers are similar to those occurring in alunite-supergroup minerals, and this is a further example of the ability of nature to use similar modules in forming the large number of currently known structural arrangements.

Its description was possible through a multi-technique approach, and its crystal structure was solved through three-dimensional electron diffraction, revealing close relations with gibbsite. The partial replacement of (OH) by F induces subtle by detectable structural changes. This study reveals that Al hydroxides could be a source of F in geological environments.

The new mineral species was found in a few specimens in the dumps of the old Varenche Mine, Valle d'Aosta, Italy, which is therefore the type locality and the only locality in the world. It was found at Rother Kopf, Eifel volcanic fields, Germany, where in occurs in cavities in a quartz–sanidine fragment embedded in a volcanic rock. Rotherkopfite occurs as dark brownish-red crystals, up to about 0.2 mm across. The intriguing crystal structure is based on two interwoven three-dimensional frameworks.
