We conducted experimental and computational studies, compiling datasets of compounds with established refractive indices and supplementing them with our measurements of compounds containing I⁻, Br⁻, or Br7+. We calculated the electronic polarizabilities of these ions to estimate the mean refractive index of I- and Br-containing compounds. Results were compared to the Gladstone–Dale approach, confirming their reliability in predicting optical properties.

Volcanic gas emissions were quantified during the 2021 La Palma eruption using ground-based direct-sun Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential optical absorption spectroscopy up to 140 km from the vent. New petrological estimations are consistent with our emission budgets. These findings highlight the feasibility of using existing atmospheric monitoring networks to study the atmospheric impact of volcanic degassing and support monitoring during eruptive crises.

The diversity of chemical patterns in multi-stage fluorite mineralization from two neighbouring deposits in the Black Forest is investigated. From over 70 samples, 7 fluorite groups and 3 hydrothermal events are identified after chemical and mathematical classification. The relative chronology and features suggest different mineralization histories and source aquifers for both deposits despite their proximity. Genetic differences are likely controlled by different behaviours of their host rocks.

Short summary
Götzenite and wöhlerite were found as part of a fissure assemblage in the Fohberg phonolite (Kaiserstuhl, SW Germany) in close contact to each other. Götzenite shows rotation twinning on [001], and wöhlerite shows reflection twinning on (100). Götzenite represents a special case, where the twin domains are arranged in a certain way with the main axis nx of the optical indicatrix being parallel to the twin axis c in both domains.
