3 Nomenclature/classification proposals approved in June 2026

3.1 Renaming of schultenite to schulténite

The mineral name “schultenite” is executively changed to “schulténite”, in agreement with the original spelling of the name of the person to whom it is dedicated. Indeed, the mineral was named to honor the Finnish chemist August Benjamin af Schultén (1856–1912). Since the mineral dates back to 1926, this was evidently a simple oversight in the massive renaming of minerals that occurred some years ago (Burke, E. A. J.: Tidying up mineral names: an IMA-CNMNC scheme for suffixes, hyphens and diacritical marks, Mineralogical Record, 39, 131–135, 2008).

3.2 Modraite: ideal formula

During peer review of the paper presenting the description of the new mineral modraite, IMA no. 2023-108a, first announced in CNMNC Newsletter 79, the ideal formula was corrected from Ca19Fe2+Al4(Al6Fe22+)(4)(SiO4)10(Si2O7)4(OH)10 to Ca19Fe2+(Al11Fe2+)(SiO4)10(Si2O7)4O(OH)9 (https://doi.org/10.2138/am-2025-10007). Accordingly, the IMA formula of modraite is modified by executive decision. This revision is consistent with similar changes recently made to the chemical formulae of closely related minerals (alumovesuvianite, cyprine, and fluorvesuvianite) as reported in CNMNC Newsletter 91.
